Will I lose My Progress If I Uninstall a Steam Game and Reinstall it?

steam games list

Steam made headlines when they announced “if you uninstall a game and reinstall it later, your saved data will not be affected. This is due to them having implemented new technology that saves games into the cloud automatically.

The same thing happened with Fallout 3 and its recent DLCs. Since then there’s been an increasing number of Steam related gamers who’ve asked if this same feature applies to all games.

Please note: Not all Steam games support cloud saves. If you’re playing a game that doesn’t save to the cloud, your progress will not be saved if you uninstall and reinstall it.

How to enable Automatic Steam Cloud?

If you are using the Steam client, then you may want to enable the Automatic Steam Cloud feature. This will ensure that your game saves and settings are automatically backed up to the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about losing them if something happens to your computer.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Open the Steam client

2. Click the Steam menu, then click Settings

3. In the Settings window, click on Cloud. You might have to scroll down a bit if you are using a small resolution.

4. There are three boxes there where you need to checkmark ‘Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.’ This will save your game saves and settings for supported games.

5. Click OK and you’re done!

Now, any time you save your game while playing a supported game, the save will automatically be backed up to the cloud. This is a great way to ensure that your progress is always safe, no matter what happens to your computer. Plus, it will help save on space since you won’t have to keep a backup of your saves.

If you ever need to see your Steam Cloud files, then you can find them at: -Steam\userdata\<steamID>\244940\remote

-Just replace <steamID> with your specific steam ID and it will show you your cloud files.

Steam ID: http://steamidfinder.com/

(You can find your SteamID by clicking on your username on the upper right corner of the steam client and go to view profile)

Note: You can use some tools like https://sourceforge.net/projects/unacomm/ to automatically login to the steam client.

Note2: Cloud synchronization is only available on games that have been ported or modified to work with Steam Cloud. To keep your saved game, make sure you exit the Steam client before removing a computer from your account. This will allow time for it to sync first.

If you are playing a single player game, the game will save on your computer. If you are playing a multiplayer game, both you and the other player(s) will need to have Automatic Steam Cloud enabled in order for the saves to work.

Enabling this feature is a great way to keep your progress safe, and it’s really easy to do. So why not give it a try and see if you like the results?

Will Steam Save my Game Progress if I Uninstall the Game?

Yes, Steam has a feature called Cloud Save which automatically saves your game progress in the cloud. This means that if you ever uninstall the game, delete it from your computer, or switch to a different computer, you can still access your saved game progress by logging into Steam.

If I uninstall Steam on my Windows PC, will my game save data be erased?

No, your game save data is stored in a different location. If you choose to re-install Steam later and the game is still available in our store, you should be able to redownload it at any time and pick up where you left off. If you uninstalled and re-installed the same version of the game, it should still have your save data.

If you own a copy of that game outside of Steam, then the uninstalled Steam copy is no longer available for redownload in Steam store – just contact support with proof if this was your situation.

If the game is no longer available in store, then your save data will be lost.
