Are you confused about whether it’s the right time to update your PC/Laptop or not? Don’t worry in this post you’ll know what are the signs and symptoms of a bad CPU and how you can identify them.

After reading this post you’ll know

  • Whether you should upgrade your PC or not
  • Ways to speed up your window

There could be many signs and symptoms of a bad CPU  like, freezing, overheating, sudden shutdown etc, to better understand these symptoms read this article.

There are flip sides to these symptoms such as overheating can occur due to other reasons, which is why it is important to understand the symptoms well so that you do not waste your money in making a wrong purchase.

Before jumping directly into hardware make you check for other things like operating system, drivers etc, for this you can follow this detailed guide.

So, let’s start,

Frequent Freeze or Shutdown:

The most common symptom of a bad CPU is random freezing or sudden shutdown. There can be many other reasons such as running heavy software or doing multiple tasks at the same time that use all the resources.

You should not face this problem after applying all the above suggestions or while doing normal work.

You can face frequent freezing right after you turn on your PC. Your computer may become completely unresponsive during this freeze. No matter how many times you press the keys, you cannot get over this until you restart the system. Or sometimes it stops abruptly while performing a normal task.

If this symptom you’re getting frequently then this could be the symptom of a bad CPU.

It is very common for the CPUs to get hot while doing heavy tasks, but some time due to overheating especially in summer weather can cause permanent damage.

Overheating of CPUs is very common when doing heavy work, but sometimes overheating can result in permanent CPU damage especially during the summer season.

CPUs typically produce enough heat that can be easily cooled by their own cooling fans. Sometimes these fans are dust-stained or running poorly, not being able to cool the CPU and may burn your CPU which results in blue screens and other erratic behaviour from your PC.

Prolonged overheating can destroy the CPU. So if you face the issue of overheating and you don’t hear a fan, be cautious you can damage your CPU.

Physical Damage

As mentioned in the above point, if the processor is exposed to heat for a long time it can get damaged permanently.

Besides that, you can notice charred marks over the CPU socket. ( as you can see in the screenshot below).

In these types of cases, the damages are more severe and irreversible. The only thing you can do about it is to simply replace the CPU.

 Beep, Pause, Beep

When you start your PC if you hear only the Beep sound this indicates a problem with your hardware component. Your system produces a series of beep tones, through which you can identify whether the problem is related to which hardware component.

The system produces beeps for graphics card, ram etc, for CPU it’ll beep, pause, beep, pause, followed by two sequential beeps, this beep is linked to a CPU issue.

To fix this issue you can follow this guide if this fixes your issue then good if not then this is a symptom of a bad CPU, now you’ve to change your CPU.

Blue Screen Of Death

Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) aka Blue Screen indicates a system crash caused by a number of different problems, such as a general hardware failure or an unexpectedly critical process.

BSoDs can be caused by poor hardware, such as faulty memory, power supply issues, overheating of components, or hardware running beyond its specification limits, etc.

In this case, you can do the following things:

  • Test your computer memory for errors
  • Check temperature to ensure this isn’t overheating
  • Search for fixing on google and youtube
  • Hire a pro to do it for you.

How To Check Processor Is Working Or Not

Now You’ve read about the symptoms of a bad CPU but now You might want to know how to check if the processor is working or not.

If you’re using an Intel process then you can diagnose your process with a free intel processor diagnostic tool.

  • Check if your PC is running a 64 bit or 32 bit version of window OS.
  • To check, click on the window icon and select properties. There you can see your window version.
  • Then download the tool according to your verion.

After download install this software and run the software and hit start test.

It’ll take approximately 3-4 min to display results.

If the results show pass then your processor is working fine and if it shows fails then there is a problem in your process.
